Schrader vs Presta Valve — What’s the Difference and Which Do I Have?
One of the most common inner tube buying mistakes is ordering the wrong valve type. This guide explains the difference in plain English — and how to identify which valve your bike uses.
What is a Schrader valve?
A Schrader valve is the wider, shorter valve — identical to the valve on a car tyre. If you’ve ever inflated a car tyre at a petrol station, you’ve used a Schrader valve.
Key features:
- Wider diameter (8mm) with a threaded outer casing
- Spring-loaded pin in the centre that opens when pressed
- Can be inflated at any garage air line or with a standard pump
- No locking nut — just remove the dust cap and inflate
- Very common on mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and leisure bikes sold in the UK
Schrader valves are the most practical choice for most cyclists. Any pump will fit, any garage will work, and there’s nothing to forget to undo before inflating.
What is a Presta valve?
A Presta valve is the narrower, longer valve with a small metal locking nut at the top. It’s the valve you’ll find on most road bikes and higher-end mountain bikes.
Key features:
- Narrower diameter (6mm) — slimmer than a Schrader
- Has a locking nut at the top that must be loosened before inflating
- Requires a Presta-compatible pump head (most quality pumps have both Schrader and Presta heads)
- Cannot be inflated at a standard garage air line without an adapter
- Allows higher pressures — preferred for road cycling
The most common mistake with Presta valves is forgetting to loosen the locking nut before attaching the pump. If your pump won’t inflate the tyre, check the nut first.
How to tell which valve your bike has
Look at the valve sticking out of your wheel rim:

The quickest check: if the valve looks like a car tyre valve, it’s Schrader. If it’s slim with a small nut on top, it’s Presta.
You can also check your wheel rim — Schrader rims have a wider hole, Presta rims have a narrower hole. This matters because you cannot fit a Schrader tube into a Presta rim without drilling the hole wider.
Can I swap from Presta to Schrader (or vice versa)?
Presta rim → Schrader tube: Not directly. The Schrader valve is wider and won’t fit through a Presta rim hole. You would need to enlarge the rim hole with a drill — not recommended unless you know what you’re doing.
Schrader rim → Presta tube: Yes, this works fine. A Presta valve is narrower than the Schrader hole, so it fits through easily. You may want to use a valve nut to stop the tube rattling.
The practical answer: buy the valve type that matches your current rim. Don’t try to swap unless you have a specific reason.

Common questions
Can I use a Presta pump on a Schrader valve? Most modern pumps have a reversible head that works with both. Check your pump — there’s usually a small rubber insert you can flip or remove to switch between valve types.
My pump won’t inflate my Presta tyre — why? Almost always because the locking nut hasn’t been loosened. Unscrew the small nut at the top of the valve a few turns (don’t remove it), then attach the pump.
Do Presta valves lose air faster than Schrader? No — both valve types hold air equally well when properly inflated. Presta valves are sometimes preferred at very high pressures (road cycling) because they seal more reliably under pressure.
Can I get a Schrader-to-Presta adapter? Yes — small adapters are available that allow you to inflate a Presta valve at a Schrader pump or garage air line. Useful to carry as a backup.
