Resin vs metallic brake pads — which should I choose?

Resin (organic) pads like the B05S offer a quieter, more progressive braking feel and are gentler on rotors. They are the correct choice for most trail, commuter, and e-bike use. Metallic (sintered) pads offer more stopping power in wet and muddy conditions and last longer, but can be noisier and generate more heat. For Peak District trail riding in mixed conditions, resin pads are the standard recommendation for most riders.

How to replace disc brake pads

1. Remove the wheel to access the calliper
2. Remove the retaining pin or clip holding the pads in place
3. Slide out the old pads and spring
4. Push the calliper pistons back gently using a tyre lever or flat tool — this creates space for the new, thicker pads
5. Insert the new B05S pads and spring, ensuring correct orientation
6. Refit the retaining pin or clip
7. Refit the wheel and pump the brake lever several times to seat the pads against the rotor
8. Bed in the new pads with 10–15 moderate stops before riding hard

Note: After pushing back the pistons, check your brake fluid reservoir — fluid level will rise. Do not overfill.

Common questions

How do I know when my brake pads need replacing?
Signs include: reduced stopping power, a metallic grinding noise when braking, a squealing sound that doesn’t clear after bedding in, or visible wear — the pad material should be at least 0.5mm thick. If you can see the metal backing plate through the pad, replace immediately.

Are B05S pads compatible with Shimano SLX, XT, or XTR brakes?
No — B05S pads are for entry-level Shimano callipers (MT200, MT400, MT500, Acera, Alivio, Altus). SLX, XT, and XTR use different pad shapes — check your calliper model before ordering.

Do I need to bed in new brake pads?
Yes — new pads should be bedded in with 10–15 moderate stops from around 20mph before riding hard. This transfers a thin layer of pad material onto the rotor surface for optimal braking performance.

Can I use these on an e-bike?
Yes — B05S pads are e-bike rated, meaning they are designed to handle the higher heat loads generated by the additional weight and motor assistance of e-bikes.

Should I replace both front and rear pads at the same time?
Not necessarily — front brakes typically wear faster than rear. Replace pads when worn, regardless of whether the other axle needs replacing. Always replace both pads in a calliper as a pair.
