Why carry a puncture repair kit?

A spare tube gets you moving again in minutes, but it doesn’t help if you get a second puncture. A repair kit means you can fix the first tube and keep the spare as backup. On longer Peak District rides — particularly on the Longdendale Trail or High Peak routes where you may be several miles from the nearest road — carrying both is the sensible approach. How to repair a puncture

1. Remove the wheel and locate the puncture by inflating the tube and listening or feeling for escaping air
2. Mark the puncture location, then deflate the tube fully
3. Roughen the area around the puncture with the sandpaper provided
4. Apply a thin layer of vulcanising solution and allow to become tacky (2–3 minutes)
5. Press a patch firmly over the puncture and hold for 60 seconds
6. Allow to cure for 5 minutes before reinflating
7. Refit the tube and tyre, inflate to the correct pressure

Common questions

Is a vulcanised patch repair permanent?
Yes — a correctly applied vulcanised patch is a permanent repair. The vulcanising solution chemically bonds the patch to the tube rubber. Self-adhesive patches (without glue) are a temporary fix; vulcanised patches are the proper repair.

Can I repair a tube with a large tear or split?
No — puncture repair kits are for small holes caused by thorns, glass, or sharp objects. Large tears, splits along the seam, or damage near the valve cannot be reliably repaired and the tube should be replaced.

How long does a puncture repair take?
With practice, around 10–15 minutes roadside. The main time is waiting for the vulcanising solution to become tacky before applying the patch — don’t rush this step.

Does this kit work on both Schrader and Presta valve tubes?
Yes — the repair patches work on any standard inner tube regardless of valve type. The valve type only affects which pump you need to reinflate.

Should I carry a spare tube as well as a repair kit?
Yes — for longer rides, carry both. Use the spare tube for a quick roadside fix, then repair the punctured tube at home to restore your backup.
